This print of a scholar experiencing a vision is an allegory of faith. The apparition at the window symbolizes divine wisdom, which is only indirectly and imperfectly understood by man. Rembrandt represented the supernatural light falling on the man’s head and shoulders, as though he is taking in some of this God-given knowledge. This impression on Japanese paper exudes an agreeable warm tone.
