Rembrandt’s rendering of Christ returning from the Temple – which was rarely represented – is nothing short of masterful. In this print he worked extensively with drypoint. The velvety burr allowed him to create sharp contrasts between the light and shadow, increasing the impression of a bright sunny day. We, the viewers, can almost feel why Joseph here needs his broadbrimmed hat.
