Mezzotint portrait on paper of Queen Mary II (1662-1694) of England, Scotland and Ireland, engraved and published by John Smith (1652-1743) in London c.1695. This half-length oval portrait is based on a full length-portrait of the queen (1690) by Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) in the Royal Collection (RCIN 922110), one half of a pair of portraits of the royal couple. In the print, two strands of pearls extend beyond the frame, cleverly playing with space and depth. For a comment on the relationship between Kneller and Smith see CBL Wep 4178.83.
