Woman of Mulgrave, [1789-1794]

Summary: Portrait of Mulgrave’s Woman (Alaska), a half-bodied view of the spectator and a flirted layer knotted around the neck. The face stands out for its Asian factions, and the cloth-shaped ornament in the nasal septum or calf that divides the two holes of the nose. Performed during the Malaspina expedition, which took place between 1789 and 1794. Commander Alejandro Malaspina lead the expedition organized by the Spanish crown to tour his American possessions, according to a plan presented by the sailor himself. The material gathered is scattered in different institutions of Spain, England, Argentina and Chile. It is attributed to Tomás de Suría, painter born in Madrid. In 1778 he moved to Mexico with his teacher Jerónimo Antonio Gil to found the Academy of San Carlos.
