The $100 million Mamilla project is now well under way.

The project is being funded by the British financier Cyril Stein. The Mamilla area of Jerusalem is bounded on one side by the city wall of Old Jerusalem. The architects began work on the project seventeen years ago and the plans include a pedestrian mall, 120 shops, hotel and 200 apartments. Archaeological remains uncovered during the excavations outside the Jaffa Gate will be preserved by having a section of the road supported on columns. The project will be the biggest civilian construction project in Israel. The Mamilla area, which was the border area before the 67 war, was always a little run down, but the new plans will make it one of the most attractive and expensive parts of the city.
