Other artists instructed their models to pose as characters in famous historical or mythological scenes. Rembrandt, in contrast, chose to make a direct reproduction of the models in front of him. The woman in this etching is presented with a nude upper body, sitting unostentatiously in a domestic interior near a stove. Rembrandt remained true to his principle, namely seeking inspiration in daily life.
