This illustration describes the problems of understanding , recognition and communication for people suffering from Alzheimers disease . The head of the one with Alzheimers is shown in red with a shrunken brain and yellow ‘thinking’ bubbles attempting to understand their carer painted in green who is addressing them, depicted by yellow ‘speaking’ bubbles. Alzheimers is a degenerative neurological disease characterised by contraction of the brain and impairment of cognitive function, particularly short-term memory. In severe cases sufferers are unable to recognise loved ones including long-term spouses. The painting is on perspex.
