Jupiter disguised as a satyr sneaks a glimpse between the legs of Princess Antiope. The eroticism of Rembrandt’s etching is far greater than that of Annibale Carracci’s print, which served as his model. Rembrandt left out extraneous details and suggested more sexual abandon through Antiope’s sensually parted lips and raised arms. The shadow cast by Jupiter on her buttocks and genitals make her all the more intriguing.
