Half length portrait of a young man, seated facing the camera. He has a dark jacket, buttoned up to the neck, with his left hand inside the jacket. White shirt, dark cravat with large bow. Clean shaven, though perhaps starting to grow sideburns ?

Lower half only of case, breaking apart and glass loose within it. Fragile. There is a complex design based on an oval on the reverse of the case, of which the leather is stained and worn.

Notes on accompanying card: Portrait of two princes from Hawaii: Alexander Liholiho (Kamehameha IV) and his brother Lot (Kamehameha V), with Gerrit Parmele Judd, a Congregational cleric, at that time Foreign Minister to the Hawaiian Kingdom. Wholeplate daguerreotype, possibly by Southworth and Hawes. They set out in 1849 on a trip to America and Europe.
