Half-length portrait of a seated man, facing the camera. He has dark curly hair and sideburns. In his left hand he holds a book vertically, his finger in a page, his right hand is on his right leg. He wears a dark jacket, dark plaid waistcoat with a watch chain, dark tied cravat, white shirt, paler trousers. His left elbow rests on a cloth-covered table on which also rests a microscope beside which are two eyepieces, a spare objective, and a live box.

Hand coloured, half-length portrait of a seated woman. She wears a pleated dress with collar and a brooch fastened at the neck. She wears a long cord around her neck to which a circular cameo is attached. Her right hand rests in her lap whilst her left hand holds a small rectangular framed daguerreotype. Her brooch, cameo, daguerreotype frame and the visible part of the chair back are hand coloured. Her hair is worn in a middle parting. To her left is a table covered with a floral patterned table cloth, on this is an indistinguishable black object. Plain background.

Photographer Thomas Thurlow - In 1847 he acquired the license for Photography for the County of Suffolk which he practiced for a time. T Wharton case maker registered his ‘Design for a Miniature picture frame back’ with the certificate of registration on 23rd August 1841. This object is dated June 3rd , 1851 but on the backing the metal is embossed with 4 August 1841.
