Three quarter length portrait of a seated man, facing left. His right arm is resting on a table on which also sits a glass dome, a display containing a number of mounted ivory puzzle balls. He wears a dark jacket, paler waistcoat, white shirt with gold buttons (gold highlights) and dark cravat. Clean-shaven, with longish curly dark hair. His left hand holds a book, his finger inserted in a page. the chair is ornate, turned wood. The glass dome reflects windows in the studio.

Three-quarter length standing portrait of a balding man, wearing jacket, trousers, shirt front and cravat. The interior includes a fireplace mantle, which he leans against, a chair and a mirror, with what appears to be the reflection of the camera in it.

Lower half only of case, breaking apart and glass loose within it. Fragile. There is a complex design based on an oval on the reverse of the case, of which the leather is stained and worn.
