Photo published in the volume “Nerej, a village from the ancient land of Vrancea,” author Dr. Paula Popoiu and Ion Cherciu, Ed.“Encyclopedic” Bucharest, 2007. Research Nerej; the one who immortalized all the important moments of this monographic campaign was the photographer Iosif Berman (1892-1941), journalist and official photographer of the Royal Court; he was present, almost, in all the monographic campaigns of the villages, with the teams of Professor Dimitrie Gusti. Portraits of women in popular work port specific to the area: dimie vest (thick woolen fabric used in making peasant clothes), shirt with rivers and shallots (wide embroidery at the top of the sleeves, made with arnici or silk), cathdrum (rectangular piece of woolen cloth, woven in two sherds), black, undecorated, sticks. One of the women is riding a horse and the others stand in front of it. Of the two women standing, one has in one hand a rod and the other one has caught in the girdle a torso fork with wool hanger on it and in the hand a spindle on which twists the torso thread. The woman on horseback sits on the horse’s back on a hoop and a pair of desagi (two-part traist, wearing on shoulder or saddle). In the background we can see the ridge of a mountain.
