Vos, Maarten de, after
Engraving on paper of the personification of Innocence (Innocentia) after a design Maarte de Vos (1532-1603) probably published in Antwerp c. 1581. Innocence sits on a cloud with a lamb and putti while children play various games below: inflate pigs’ bladders, ride hobby horses, play with tops, pinwheels, knucklebones and marbles, spin hoops, walk on stilts, and play with dolls. A similar selection of children’s games can be found in Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Children’s Games painting from 1560.
