Chester Beatty

Mezzotint on paper of the Lamentation of Christ (or Pieta), engraved and published by John Smith (1652-1743) in London between 1667 and 1743. It is a modified copy in reverse of an engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I (1595-1675) which was itself a copy of a 1634 painting by Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) now in the Munich Alte Pinakothek (606). The original painting includes a second angel and three additional cherubs. Mary cradles the body of her recently deceased son between her knees.
