Mezzotint on paper of Venus and Cupid, published by John King (fl.1698-1738) in London between 1698 and 1725, after a painting by Jean Marc Nattier (1685-1766). Venus sitting in the clouds holds Cupid’s bow above her head and points down to earth. Cupid pricks his finger with his arrow. The composition is perhaps a reference to the opening scene of the Tale of Cupid and Psyche.
