Romney, George, after · 1779
Mezzotint portrait on paper of siblings Catherine Mary Clavering (1769-1785) and Thomas John Clavering (1771-1853) with their pet dogs, engraved and published by John Raphael Smith (1751-1812) in London in 1779. It is a copy of a painting by George Romney (1734-1802) now in the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens in California (78.20.35). Romney was able to depict the simplicity and innocence of childhood without being overly sentimental.
