Mezzotint portrait on paper of James Thynne (d.1709), engraved by William Faithorne the Younger (c.1669-1703) and published by John Bowles (c.1710-1779) in London. It is a copy of a painting made by Johannes Kerseboom (d.1708). James was the youngest son of Thomas Thynne, 1st Viscount Weymouth, and Frances Finch of Longleat House (Wiltshire). He died young, and a poem about his death was written by his aunt, Anne Kingsmill Finch, Countess of Winchilsea (1661-1720): 'On the death of the honourable Mr. James Thynne.' In the print, James is seated beside a fountain, holding a shell to catch water sprouting from its fountain sculpture: a cherub seated on a dolphin, blowing a horn-shaped conch.
