The bodhisattva of compassion (Kannon) is depicted wearing a richly decorated robe on the lid.The quality of the lacquer technique here is exceptional. After the decoration was applied it was covered with lacquer and then carefully polished until the motif reappeared. This produced an image, which, like a brush painting, is completely flat.
