The nude Christ Child embraces a child-size cross. It is a rare representation of the message found later in a well-known Dutch Christmas song: ‘He came to earth already bearing His cross’. While the mother and child are based on a painting by Rogier van der Weyden, the maker of the print endowed them with a very individual tender character.
