Amsterdam’s Trippenhuis, home to the Rijksmuseum in the 19th century before it moved to Museumplein, is visible through the trees. A striking aspect is the way Van der Heyden rendered the canal, leading from the foreground to the centre of the composition. Adriaen van der Velde painted the figures, as he often did for other artists too.
