The late afternoon sunlight casts long shadows on the ground. Herders head home with their cattle; a shepherd boy drives his flock before him with a stick. Berchem was fond of motifs that enliven his pastoral landscapes – motifs that tell a story. Like no other artist, he defined the Dutch image of Italian country life.
