Love of one’s neighbour (charity) is more important than religious conviction: a man from Samaria (Palestine), depicted as a heathen with a turban, tends to the victim of a brutal robbery. Earlier, two passing Jewish priests (at lower right) had ignored the half-dead man. The ruins and the prominent nude reflect the painter’s interest in Italian art and classical antiquity.
