Breitner painted the Rokin and the Langebrug (Long Bridge) from a window in the building of the artists’ association Arti et Amicitiae. At the right is part of the tall façade of the former Maternity Clinic, now in use by the University of Amsterdam. Many of Amsterdam’s canals were being filled in during those years, which sparked heated debates. The section of the Rokin where it was located was also scheduled to be filled in. Arti et Amicitiae was against the practice. It eventually took place in 1933.
