Buitenzorg (Bogor) Palace, about 60 kilometres south of Jakarta, was built in the mid-18th century as a country retreat for the then governor-general. In the 19th century it was the permanent residence of the governors-general and the symbol and seat of the colonial establishment. Nowadays it serves as the official presidential palace of the Republic of Indonesia.
