MEDIEVAL ANNULAR BROOCH

A complete silver annular brooch of Medieval date. The brooch is circular with a restriction in the frame for the pin which remains in situ. The frame is D-shaped in section with the underside being plain and the front having an incised design of a ring of lozenges each containing 2-3 circular pellets and irregular inclusions of 1-2 pellets in the triangular spaces between these lozenges. The pin is formed of a tapered strip of silver which is looped around the frame restriction and with a shallow ridge and groove where the shaft of the loop and pin meet.It is notable that the brooch is of miniature form being only 16.1mm in diameter.Annular brooches of this type are dated AD c.1200-1400.Dimensions: External diameter: 16.1mm, internal diameter: 10.0mm, thickness of frame: 0.9mm, width of frame: 3mm. Length of pin: 15.2, thickness of pin: 1mm, width of pin at hinge: 1.5mm. Weight of brooch: 0.9g.
