The Portable Antiquities Scheme

A medieval mount in the form of a miniature shield with the royal coat of arms for England. The quarters with the lions couchant retain their red enamel. The quarters with the fleurs-de-lis have lost their enamel background.The shield is convex and has a means of attachment on the reverse The mount is silver-gilt with enamel, and dates from the mid- to late fourteenth century. Dimensions: height 15 mm, width 11 mm Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
