An incomplete miniature cast copper alloy trumpet brooch of Roman date. The head, hinge mechanism, bow and foot all survive. The pin and catchplate are missing. The head is trumpet shaped with an incised line around its edge. From the reverse of the head the remains of the double-lugged hinge mechanism can be seen. From the head the upper bow extends to a collar decorated with incised lines. Below this is a crude acanthus decoration followed by a second collar. From this collar the lower bow extends which is triangular in section. The lower bow is curved and terminates in a small circular foot knop. To the reverse of the lower bow the remains of the catchplate can be seen. The metal is a light brownish-green colour and survives in fair condition. The brooch is 29.8mm long, 8.4mm wide, and weighs 2.5g. Brooches of this type date from between 75-175 AD. Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt, p.327, fig.185, no.954.
