Bonade painting

Nilsson, Johannes

The Bonade painting belongs to it’s k Brearedsgruppen of bonade painters and is probably painted by Johannes Nilsson. Johannes Nilsson, son of Nils Svensson, and born 1757-09-01 in Gyltige, Breared parish, Halland where he lived and seemed most of his life. He died in 1827-05-19 in Håralt in the same parish. Johannes Nilsson, after his death, was only called “Gyltigemålaren” without his identity being clear. His name was thus largely forgotten for almost 100 years before Sigurd Erixon, Nils Strömbom and Albert Sandklef began research on his works and efforts during the 1920s and identified him as his name. Nowadays, Johannes Nilsson is considered by the manga to be the forename of the bonade slender and has sometimes been titled as the actual Gyltigemaler (Nyström 2012: 64). His earliest work is to be strongly paintered by the father’s malery but he eventually developed a personal style that differs from the traditional bonade. Nilsson was adept at composing the image and the symmetry was significant. The tightness of the image is prominent and he fills out voids with details, including the largely always occurring soap bubbling clouds that have become characteristic of the Brearedsgruppen, and the upside down hats. There are also filling-out flowers with pointed leaves. His skilfully drawn figures have childish round faces with large almond-shaped eyes. The female figures often wear special hats in different designs. His color scale goes in blue, red, orange and yellow (Nystöm 2012: 65). A few of his works are signed.
