Hungarian President Arpad Goencz has received a warm welcome wherever he has been in Israel during his state visit. Israelis are mindful of the fact that Hungary was as far back as 1956 the first of the communist satellites to rebel against Moscow. Although there have been disturbing anti-semitic outbreaks in Hungary since its break from the former Soviet Union, Goencz has said time and again that he will do everything in his power to ensure that racism and totalitarianism do not reoccur in his country. 600,000 Hungarian Jews died under the Nazi reign of terror. Ties between the two countries are ever deepening in all fields including business, tourism and cultural exchanges.
