“Saint Bartholomew” was born in 1523 as part of Dürer’s unfinished apostle. The apostle, wrapped in a swarming robe, stands upright, slightly sideways and turns his head towards the spectators. While in his left hand he presents the knife and thus the weapon of his martyrdom, a closed book is stuck under his right arm. His attitude is emphasized by the tree rising in the background. The rich reception of the engraving is to be understood as a sign of artistic appreciation.
