Saint George on horseback

The artist copied Dürer’s 1505/08 made copper engraving “Saint George on Horse” from the opposite side. He shows him in the lost profile, lets him take the picture almost completely and refrains from background design. The rider is accentuated by a delicate beam nimbus, carries helmet, woes and Harnisch and has placed the tournament lance with a cross flag over the proud horse. His gaze is pointed into the distance and his horse shifts his weight to the front legs. To the hooves of the horse, whose bridle, mane and tail are adorned, lies the defeated immortal. Dating and monogram point to Dürer as the spiritual creator of the image idea. In addition, the abbreviation “IVW” is integrated into the leaf.
