The first in a series of topographic scenes from this cycle, shows an arch built in honor of Augustus. In etching technique, it was made by G.B. Piranesi according to R. Newdigate's template. This sheet is in editions after 1760. In style and method of composition it differs from other representations of this series. The fact that the first leaf depicts a monument in Aosta shows that in later editions the principle of division into monuments inside and outside Rome was not consistently implemented, because this depiction is found among Roman monuments. Inscription on the board in the lower right corner lat .: IMP · CAESAR · DIVI · F · AVGVSTVS, (Rome, September 23, 63 BC - Nola near Naples, August 19, 14), real name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian (Lat. Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus), located near the town of Aosta in Piedmont.
