Unknown artist
The artist copied Dürer’s engraving “Die Geißelung” in 1512 slightly reduced in size compared to the original. At the center of a dark and windowless space is the exposed Christ, whose arms are tied around the Geißelsäule. Two torturers hit him with a rod and a whip, but he endures his torments in a uniform manner. In the background, some men attend the events as spectators. While the Dürer monogram and the dating on the beetle remind the spiritual creator of the image idea, no reference to the actual artist and the time of creation is integrated into the leaf.
