The Virgin Crowned by Two Angels

The artist copied Dürer’s 1518 made copper engraving “The Virgin of Two Angels Crowned” from the opposite side. With his etching he was clearly oriented towards the original. Mary sits in the wild on a stone, holds an apple in her hand and the Christ Child on her lap. She looks quietly towards the observer, while two angels float over her with rolling robes and are about to put a magnificent crown on her stately head. The scenery is caught by a simple tin fence, behind which a landscape with a city facility extends into the distance. Neither monogram nor dating are reminiscent of Dürer as the spiritual creator of the image idea; instead, on the stone there is the year “1538,” in which the number “5” failed. In 1827, Heller said that they came from a much later artist who incorrectly integrated them. (Cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.412.551)
