Zwei Szenen aus dem Marienleben

The etching in manner of a pen drawing combines groups of figures from Dürer’s 1511 laid “Marienleben.” On the left are the women from the wooden section “The Birth of Mary” (cf. I F 39 of the Bamberg State Library), which was designed around 1503, while on the right are the saddened Mary, the comforting Martha and Mary Magdalene from the “Christ takes leave of his mother” (cf. I F 51 of the Bamberg State Library). Below the two works of combining etching, reference is made to Dürer as the spiritual creator of the visual ideas and the collection of the English painter Paul Sandby (1731-1809). Heller included the paper under the heading “After Dürer’s Paintings and Drawings” in his publication Dürer, published in 1827 (cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.855,2295).
