The artist copied Dürer’s engraving “Die Geißelung” in 1512 slightly enlarged compared to the original. At the center of a dark and windowless space is the exposed Christ, whose arms are tied around the Geißelsäule. Two torturers hit him with a rod and a whip, but he endures his torments in a uniform manner. In the background, some men attend the events as spectators. Instead of the Dürer monogram and dating, Hopfer’s sign is integrated into the representation, while there is no evidence of Dürer as the spiritual creator of the image idea. Later deductions bear the number “197” of the Nuremberg publisher David Funck, who owned, numbered and distributed the record in the 17th century.
