The Szent István Király (St. Stephen King) Hotel was built in 1910 on the western side of the regular, rectangular main square of the medieval mining town, on the site of the former Arany Szarvas (Golden Deer) Inn, and is a huge Art Nouveau-style building compared to the neighbouring buildings. The ground floor of the two-storey, full-block building once housed a restaurant and the famous Berger confectionery and a drugstore, while the first floor was used for hotel rooms. The bohemian painters of the so-called "Nagybánya Artists' Colony", which played a very important role in Hungarian painting at the turn of the century, often came here, to the "Bergeráj".
