The artist made the engraving of copper after a painting of Dürer dating back to 1514, which is found in the inventories of the Nuremberg patrician’s family Imhof, but is considered missing. (Cf. Anzelewsky 1971, pp. 237-238 and probably Heller Dürer 1827 II.79.8) The copper engraving shows the thorn-crowned Christ with his head tilted to the right. Whilst his gaze is firmly directed towards the viewers, tears run over his cheeks. On the right, the year “1514” and the monogram Dürer are integrated into the representation. Under a Latin inscription in two lines, which closes the representation downward, both a further reference to Dürer as the spiritual creator of the image idea and the name of the actual artist can be found in the representation. Heller included the engraving under the heading “Leaves made after Dürer’s paintings and drawings” in his 1827 published Dürer publication. (Cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.845,2266)
