Rembrandt’s most exotic source of inspiration came from 17th-century Indian Mughal miniatures, a number of which he owned and copied. He also used elements in the miniatures in his own work: the Near Eastern fashions in these works lent authenticity to his biblical scenes. This is the only etching in which Rembrandt literally adopted the composition as well as several motifs from a Mughal miniature.
